Privet (Ligustrum) is an evergreen tree or shrub with four main species found in New Zealand. Privet berries and leaves are toxic to both humans and animals. It's pollen is also believed to contribute to respiratory problems such as asthma and hay fever.
As well as the health factors Privet is also an environmental pest, rapidly taking over waste areas, bush areas, and can often be found popping up in residential areas where there may be a parent tree growing nearby. Waikato Regional Council require land owners to completely eradicate privet from their property if they are issued with a 'pest plant notice' however, it is advised that Privet be kept under control regardless, to help reduce the spread of the species.
